What the font is that? Find out automatically.

Upload a screenshot or photo of text and this free font finder scans it on the spot — separating the letters, measuring their shapes against 148 popular fonts, and showing you the closest matches with a match score. Everything runs in your browser; your image is never uploaded anywhere.

How the automatic scan works

  1. Your image is read in your browser. Nothing is uploaded — the whole scan runs on your device.
  2. The lettering is split into individual letters, and each letter's shape is measured.
  3. Shapes are compared against 148 fonts, letter by letter, to find the closest candidates.
  4. The top candidates are double-checked by setting your text in each real font and comparing the whole word.

It's a mechanical shape comparison, not magic — when the lettering can't be measured cleanly (joined-up scripts, heavy effects), we say so instead of inventing confidence.

Tips for the best match

  • Crop tightly. Select the words and nothing else — no icons, no background, no second font.
  • One size, one weight per scan. A heading and body text together pull the match in two directions.
  • Give it several letters. A full word or two is much stronger evidence than two or three characters.
  • Straight-on and in focus. Rotate tilted photos upright before uploading.
  • Light text on dark is fine — polarity is detected automatically.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the font identification?

It depends on the image. Clean, straight-on screenshots of a single print-style font usually put the right font — or a near-identical one — at the top. Decorative lettering, joined-up scripts, heavy effects and tiny text are harder, and the tool tells you when its confidence is low instead of pretending. Always verify with the side-by-side preview before deciding. It compares against the 148 popular fonts in our library, so rare or commercial fonts may only match a close relative.

Does my image get uploaded to a server?

No. The entire scan — reading the image, finding the letters, comparing the shapes — runs in your browser on your device. The only network requests are loading this page's font shape database and the Google Fonts previews.

Is there a "what the font" app I need to install?

No app needed — this what-the-font tool works right in your phone or desktop browser. Upload or paste a screenshot and you get your answer in seconds, free, with no account.

What image works best?

A straight-on screenshot with high contrast between text and background, showing a single line of text in one font. Large, sharp lettering is easier to measure than small or blurry text. Lowercase words carry more identifying detail than all-caps.

Is it free?

Yes — unlimited scans, completely free, no sign-up. Every matched font is a free Google Font you can download and use in your own projects.

Is this related to WhatTheFont by MyFonts?

No — this is an independent free tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to MyFonts or its WhatTheFont product.
